And then it hurts again, hurts so infinitely much. Slightly drunk, after an exhausting day, you really would so much like to watch a film, watch porn, switch your mind off for a while... but the mind rises up. It spoils modern relaxation. And because it is right, you surrender, yet it hurts enormously. You know that instead you will shut off the internet, but then your head will be alone again in the silence. Even listening to music is exhausting compared to the exhilaration of the internet. And yet the mind demands it. Sit there, knowing: I have to now, I have to, I cannot do otherwise, I cannot numb myself. And think about what I will experience shortly, in ten minutes, alone with myself, completely a solitary person, fully there, at one way too specific place in the world, which tightens itself so much more narrowly and clearly around me as soon as I lift my head and think about what it will be like in a moment, when I will have put the device away.
Kant would have gone to sleep by now. It hurts so much to shake off this part of youth. When conscience follows you into the very last corner of your room.
Even now, modernity still holds me captive, offering me the possibility of remaining on the device even without the internet: after all, one can type so quickly here; make unconsidered, barely dense words appear, in the deceptive belief that one is keeping a fine diary. And even now one is fleeing, fleeing from slowness, which at first demands everything before it deigns to take pity and let some portion of its genuine peace descend upon me. Until then, the thoughts gon analyse and analyse.
People will not win against this; against this drive of theirs toward speed. The world unfolds more slowly than the lustful animal spirit driven by curiosity as it immerses itself in the world; and it is such a numb making wellfare to watch things rush by at the pace it finds pleasing... and yet: the slowness of the world is, and always was, an advantage to human beings; more thoughts could circle around the same object, grasp it more precisely and comprehensively, and had more time to reproduce it within themselves. The superiority of the human being over the world is passé once he has accelerated its processes into the speeds of the lustful part of his mind, merely to satisfy its desires; for then he can no longer understand it in the logos, because it unfolds at the very same pace at which that was capable only of creating it through the most rapid probing of its properties. World and mind then moving at one speed, in total exhilarating numbness. Thus, human beings are reverting themselves back into animals; it has already begun.
